A Grand Halloween Entrance

For a long time, there was an amazing Halloween house down the street. Every year on the stroke of the day before Halloween, the people who lived there would unload a piece of fabric as large as the front of their house and drape it from top to bottom, making the entire home look like a castle. From black lights to a giant skeleton superimposed on the tree across the street, their house was outstanding and no one could compete. Sadly, they moved away last year. However, their Halloween shenanigans inspired me to do more with my house on Halloween. … Continue reading

Getting Ready for Halloween

Halloween is a little over a month away. I love Halloween. I love decorating the house and wearing anything Halloween themed. The people who live on the street where I grew up and my parents still live always make a big deal about Halloween. The teenagers at one house and their friends would all dress up as famous characters and haunt the house. Even though these were my brother and sisters’ friends, I wouldn’t go anywhere near that house. The house next door to that one served hot apple cider. The next house down tricked out the whole front yard … Continue reading

Make an Entrance This Halloween

This Halloween, we’re making an entrance. Not with our costumes, that is for sure. I am not all that proficient at sewing, and I must confess that we just bought my daughter’s costume secondhand at a thrift store. It is homemade from some home, though. Guilt, guilt. No, I like decorating our house instead. Kids grow and you need to make them costumes every year – the nerve! Houses, well, sometimes they grow, but generally they stay the same approximate dimensions. We have the usual skeletons and mini-pumpkins in the trees and spiders and black cats on the window. Gradually, … Continue reading

My Favorite Halloween Couple Costumes: Spookiest Costumes

I didn’t exactly set out intending to do a My Favorite Halloween Couple Costumes series, but that’s what happened. I’ve covered funniest, sexiest, period, and classic characters costumes. I have one final category left: spookiest. I’ve never dressed up as anything spooky for Halloween. I have a sneaking suspicion neither has Wayne. (I know he hasn’t since we’ve been together, but I can’t vouch for when he was a wee thing.) It might be fun to break out of our molds and try something completely different though. Here’s the costumes I could see us doing that with: • Ghostly Gentleman … Continue reading

Disney Park Secrets: Working the Front Gate

Any Disney fan has wondered this at some point in his or her life: what would it be like to work at Disney? Be it for the movie division, at the parks, as an Imagineer, or even just in a Disney store, surrounded by the characters we grew up with, we’ve probably all thought about it at some point. So it’s fun to hear about what it could be like to work at the Happiest Place on Earth (or its East Coast sibling). Internet news/interest site Reddit has a feature called “Ask Me Anything,” wherein people, anyone from “Avengers” director … Continue reading

Parents Versus the Ice Cream Man

He’s the Pied Piper of preteens, toddlers and just about every other youngster with a sweet tooth, but the ice cream man is getting an unusually chilly reception from parents in New York City. Some moms and dads in the Big Apple are waging a war against guys who hock frozen treats from the back of their freezers on wheels. According to reports, parents are irate that the city has allowed ice cream truck owners the right to park next to their children’s schools, favorite parks and other kid-packed neighborhood attractions. As one mom puts it: “They’ve got a trapped … Continue reading
